OK Go is tons of fun. Here's the Chicago concert I SHOULD be going to tomorrow night but alas, I will be at my pseudo-graduation party: Interpol w/ Enon at the Q101 Street Festival. Alas, it was not to be.
jon,
when are you leaving for norway??
liz
ps i am glad you did not get hit by lightening.

Chicago Concert Report: I just saw OK GO in the middle of a rainstorm in downtown Chicago in the quad at DePaul University and it rocked. Tone-Loc (of "Wild Thang" fame) was a no show so OK GO did their own rap song to make up for it. Lightening struck nearby but, thankfully, OK GO had just finished their set before the rest of the show got canned.
I just watched Breakfast at Tiffany's at work, and in the background of one scene there is a poster that says "Jets to Brazil." I'm assuming that's where the band got its name? That's pretty cool.
oh, the wonders of our legal system.
It's on

You are so naughty!! Not that I should talk, as everyone knows about 85% of my cd collection is burned. However, Radiohead is the only band in which I legitimately own every one of their cds. So I'll have to listen to what you have and then continue my tradition of purchasing Radiohead (although I seem to recall Kid A was acquired by secretly throwing it in the Walmart cart while shopping with my parents . . . hey, at least someone bought it).

Good show last night. I should get my hearing back Sunday around noon.
i did something really really bad...
while at work, i downloaded the new radiohead cd. i am listening to it now, and i am liking what i hear. so, while it's bad, it feels so right. plus, my internet radio station was playing a-ha. now, i have nothing against a-ha...it's just radiohead is about 394750 times better.

i read this headline couldn't bare reading the entire story:
"Avril Lavigne's hit single "Sk8er Boi" to be adapted into feature film"
couldn't bare reading the rest because of my EXTREME happiness! that movie is gonna rock!
i have a new goal in life: to be in a wes anderson movie
Let me just say that I have owned and loved this cd since last summer, and only now does Pitchforkmedia decide to review it (and love it as much as I do)!! Thank you WSUM for allowing me to burn anything that comes into the station. Although, they used to be called Single Frame Ashtray, which I think sounds better. But no matter. I still recommend it.

Ted Leo update: His vocal cords are only severely swollen and he should be okay at some point, though the rescheduling of the cancelled Milwaukee show is still up in the air. You can see a picture of his swollen larynx and his healing larynx in the Media section of www.tedleo.com. Ew.
Apparently, The New Pornographers' The Laws Have Changed is "a parable linking primogeniture of pharaohs and the collapse of democracy under the Bush dynasty." Who knew?
while slaving away at the grainger computer labs, nicole and i completed some rockin bios. as a side note, we embrace our dorkiness...

Hopefully my tennis game will not be worsened by the fact that I have two gigantic bruises on both knees from falling down the step at Monday's last night.

There is a good show this Wednesday at the Annex that I insist we go to: Verbana, Spymob, and the Dress Rehearsal (opened for the DPC at the King Club, one member works at Urban). It's 21+!!!!
i don't remember you ever using indecent language...ever...in your life...
tori and i are going to play some tennis later today..anyone care to join us?

Sunday, May 25, 2003

It has come to my attention recently that my mother reads this blog. Thus, I apologize for prior uses of indecent language and will refrain from doing so in the future.

annie, i went to a killer bar in minneapolis that served STRONGBOW on tap! alas, it was not in 2 liter bottle form, but it was cool, nonetheless. ahh...fuzzy memories.
i am going to watch the new coldplay video..NOW.
I have returned, just in time for Liz to greet me, ha. Milwaukee was a good time, we hit up some bar/clubs and danced, not my usual scene but a fun distraction nonetheless. And guess who was bouncing at one club- oh yes, Rocky, best known for "Annie, you are as beautiful as Miller Park Stadium." I've also, in just the past week, been on both sides of the "my friend over there thinks you're cute" while at a bar. Are we returning to the 8th grade form of picking people up? Is this a good thing for the singles scene? Is there anyone left in the singles scene? Have I been watching too much Sex and the City? Answer: yes.

Some MTV news: 120 Minutes appears to have been replaced by "Subterranean," a 1 hour show on Fridays at 11:00 PM. It appears to be essentially the same, except now Jim Shearer interviews the bands in a stairway instead of in that empty room. Improvement? You be the judge.
Also, Coldplay has a new video for The Scientist, and it is pretty terrific. This video must be watched from beginning to end. Make note of little details. In fact, you can watch it here at launch.com if you can't wait for it to show up on MTV2 or MuchMusic.
momma's coming home -- today!

THANK THE FUCKING LORD I'm going to Milwaukee w/ Lesley this weekend! I wasn't sure if I was going to make it through the rest of the week with nothing to do. I'll be back Saturday for all interested parties.
The majority of acts playing on the Union Terrace this summer are up on the upcoming concerts page. I'd like to highlight the Harry Potter Birthday Party and Costume Contest in June, which includes a free viewing of HP and the Chamber of Secrets. Time to start shopping for striped scarves. This is a can't-miss occasion for sure.
thanks, nicole. i would like to point out that portland is currently sunny, with a high of 80 degrees...meanwhile it is raining and cold in minnesota.
some one just called my phone, asking me to participate in an alcohol study. i would be paid $10 an hour. do you think one of the questions will be: "are you going to use this money to buy alcohol?" of course the answer would be a resounding "YES."
alright, off to meet some peeps from the grand suburb of burnsville...often mistakenly called boringsville. wait. mistakenly? nevermind.

Wednesday, May 21, 2003

Don't worry Liz. Portland sounds much cooler and WARMER. Also, Lesley has expressed potential interest in coming out with me in August to visit the law school, which she has decided is the route for her to take. See Liz? Wherever you go, people follow.
I also got back pictures of our night at Brat's last Friday. Lots of good ones of future PFFR DJ Jon "Lazer" Rockey. If only I'd captured his nonchalant Spiderman crawl across the table. Tori removing her bra at the table will have to do.
it's official: The University of Minnesota has taken me OFF their waiting list...and DENIED me. that's ok, the party was getting dead anyway. so, nothing is holding me back from the grand and exciting city of PORTLAND, OREGON. stupid minnesota. see if i ever live in their dumb state again...(bitter, anyone?)

Tuesday, May 20, 2003

I was grilling, drinking Icehouse, and watching Jackass the Movie at 1:15 PM today. I love vacation.
Mifflin Street Block Party pictures are finally up!!! My only question: where on earth was Tori the whole time?
So, that means Maggie and I are losers and/or whores, and Liz is neither. I guess I can't deny it.

Dismemberment Plan news!
Official midwestern farewell tour dates:
Tuesday, June 17: Minneapolis at First Avenue w/ Lake Trout and Paris Texas
Wednesday, June 18: Milwaukee at the Modjeska Theatre w/ Lake Trout and Paris Texas
Thursday, June 19: Chicago at the Metro w/ Lake Trout and Miss Spice and the Malenium Band
Never heard of Lake Trout or Miss Spice? Me neither. However, here's what Eric from DP had to say:
"I'm gonna put an extra plug into people living where we're playing with Miss Spice and the Malenium Band. Go-Go music is something you'll probably never see again, unless you move to DC. Full on 10 piece band with back up singers and percussionists and a beat that'll make you freak on the stranger next to you. Don't try to catch just the last few songs of Miss Spice's set, you'll be bummed if you do." Ok.
Tickets to these are either on sale or will be in the next week at MusicToday or Ticketmaster. I plan on going to the Milwaukee and Chicago shows, so if anyone is interested in going to either with me, let me know!
i got an email from jim, a friend from high school, and this is something he wrote:
"Grad school is for losers and whores and people named Liz."
damn
damn
damn

I was in American Eagle today with Tori, when the Glass Danse remix (not as good as the original) by the Faint was on. AE has always been on the cutting edge of music. I'm being serious, by the way. I wonder how I can get a job designing the in-store music for a retail store? Hmmmmm. . . I think I'm on to something . . ..

Sunday, May 18, 2003

so one of my TAs just emailed me, asking me if i turned in the final exam, for he cannot find it. well good people, not only did i turn in my exam, but i turned in it EARLY. now, i am not in law school just yet, but i feel that once i followed instructions to turn in said paper, that said paper is no longer my obligation. therefore, i should be granted an A.
i HATE stupid TAs.

Saturday, May 17, 2003

3:46 am??? Something tells me you didn't go right home after Brats . . .
if only someone would say something so deep and meaningful to me...

"I can't let you go, Trinity. I love you too damn much."

Thursday, May 15, 2003

only if they will let me throw chairs on people below...
Liz and Maggie:
I just got an email from the Rave saying I can purchase "VIP" reserved balcony seats for the White Stripes at the Eagle's Ballroom July 5. Are either of you interested? I can buy them early on Saturday morning.
dear maggie,
i believe you have studied far more than you should. stop now before you go insane.
love,
liz
maggie pointed this out...its a note on the bag holding graduation caps/gowns:

"NOTE: IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO THROW THE GRADUATION CAP, ANY DAMAGES OR INJURIES CAUSED BY MISUSE WILL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PERSON(S) WHO PERFORMED SUCH ACTION."
I had a really weird dream last night. I was at some sort of graduation talent show, and Liz and I decided to do a hip-hop/rap song. So we had the lyrics written down for each of our parts (I remember the first line of mine had the number 21 in it) and went up on stage to practice before the big show. It was awful, and Danny Gusavic was there to tell us it wasn't very good. But Liz and I kept practicing our rhymes. There were also separate bathrooms for the undergraduates and graduates.
In response, I've taken this as a sign and started downloading a bunch of hip-hop.
Also later in my weird dream-filled night, I dreamt that I was on a giant hill with hundreds of people when a bunch of boulders started coming towards us and we had to run away down the hill. The police told us it was a SARS attack from another nation. What the hell does that mean??
I think I should just stop sleeping.

Wednesday, May 14, 2003

i saw the new radiohead video on launch.com. thom yorke is pretty sexy, in a creepy kind of way (and creepy in the best way possible).
Salon.com has some good stuff on its website today. First of all, an article about this thing called the "Soul mate calculator" (try it yourself here). Answer a few questions and see how many more people you have to meet to find your soul mate. Everyone in the article had like, 70,000,000. Mine calculated to 12 men between the ages of 19 and 28. Does that mean my standards aren't high enough?

Also great was this website, reminiscent of www.blackpeopleloveus.com: www.rent-a-negro.com. Anyone want to rent one with me for graduation this weekend?

Tuesday, May 13, 2003

PAPER=FINISHED!!! And it's awful! But my summer has officially begun. Actually, I think it will officially begin when I move back downtown. That just can't happen fast enough.
HAHAHAHA.
The White Stripes are coming to Milwaukee, July 5!!! With the Whirlwind Heat at the Eagle's Ballroom. Tickets on sale Sunday at noon. This is definitely going to sell out.
"Anyone can sit down write a boring, artistic song. Pop music is the hardest s--- to write." -- BRITNEY SPEARS

she can write?

Monday, May 12, 2003

So, instead of writing up my last paper, I'm adding to this website. Check out the new recommended listening page under the Our Show section. So much more important than non-profit organizations in my opinion.
I GOT THE TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP FOR NEXT SPRING!!!!!! Huzzah for me!!! Those freshman and sophomore accounting 100 students have no idea what they are in for.
t-minus SIX hours to complete and utter summer freedom. yay for NO MORE SCHOOL (until aug. 25).
I realized I've been listening to way too much depressing or thought-provoking music lately, capped off by the concerts we watched this weekend. So today I've listened to nothing but the New Pornographers. They make me happy.
I am prepared for the physical challenge portion of the application process.

Sunday, May 11, 2003

I moved the concert reviews to the upcoming concerts page- it seemed more appropriate.
Speaking of concerts, apparently Interpol is playing at some Q101 Street Fair in Chicago on June 1st. I'd assume this means other cool bands must be playing this fair. However, Q101's website says nothing of it. I demand answers.
i finally listened to maps by the yeah yeah yeahs. wow.
I just watched Better Luck Tomorrow with my family. It was amazing. Definitely one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I'm pretty sure the lead character was Filipino.
when i get a car, i will make it a point not to drive really fast throgh puddles, causing water to splash all over innocent pedestrians. because i know how NOT fun that is. especially when the water is cold and the poor person has to sit in wet jeans for the next five hours. but i speak in hypotheticals...or not.
The Decemberists were INCREDIBLE. Do you think if I moved there, Colin the singer would hang out with me? Could he have been any more endearing? What a voice. I have also been inspired to take up the accordion. Everyone: Go purchase their new cd immediately.

Jon "DJ Lazer" Rockey, your application is currently being processed. Should we choose to advance you to the next round, there will be a series of interviews in front of a panel to assess your DJ skills. A personality assessment may also take place to see if you can provide the appropriate complement to your potential co-host. You will be contacted shortly.
so, the decemberists were amazingly good last night. AND they are from portland. do you think they will hang out with me when i move there? yeah, i didn't think so either.

Saturday, May 10, 2003

since it is i who is to be replaced, i feel the need to say one thing: jon leser rockey is the coolest name ever. that is all.

bright eyes last night: connor strummed on his little guitar and sang despressing songs. it was brilliant...and bless his heart for playing 'bowl of oranges' (#8 on my top 10) that song made me happy, instead of suicidal.
Hi, I'm applying to host the radio show next semester.
Name: Jonathan Leser Rockey
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 150 lbs
Picture: http://www.angelfire.com/wi2/blondhairqt/rockandbuck.jpg
Seeing Bright Eyes last night inspired me to start a concert review page. I thought that would be easier than me blogging all my thoughts on the show. So look in the Our Show section for our thoughts on that and other upcoming concerts we plan on seeing.

Thursday, May 08, 2003

So I'm bored and avoiding studying for my final tomorrow morning. Instead, I applied for the Bachelor online, haha. It was a really easy application: name, height, weight, picture. I can tell what's really important to this show!
"I don't want to be barefoot and pregnant; that would just not be fabulous."
-Best Bachelor quote yet

Wednesday, May 07, 2003

it's official: i am excited for the BRIGHT EYES concert on friday. SUPER excited! let's just hope connor doesn't hurt his vocal chords before then, shall we?

it's official: nicole is a dork

it's official: i could use a drink...
Yesterday my group had to write up an ethics case. I insisted on making it somewhat fun, so our companies are "X2 Services" and "GloboChem" and there is an auditor named Wolverine and a CFO named Rogue. However, I'm the only one in my group who knew what any of those names referred to and thus, was the only one having the fun.

In more Adult Swim news, the Pub is having another Adult Swim night this Friday from 10 PM -1AM!!!!!!! Breaks must be taken from studying for finals to go to this and win Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sealab prizes.

Tuesday, May 06, 2003

I'M AN ANGRY GUMBALL...
I believe that can be arranged, Sam.

In other news, my brother has just purchased matching Aqua Teen Hunger Force t-shirts for him, me, and one of his friends. It has a picture of shake, fries, and meatwad on it. Once this class is over on Friday I can actually start watching Adult Swim again, along with 120 Minutes on Sundays. Huzzah!

Monday, May 05, 2003

ARRRGH!!!
Apparently Ted Leo, who Liz and I were supposed to see tonight, hurt his vocal cords big time and cancelled the rest of his tour. Good thing I found this out BEFORE we drove all the way to Milwaukee. But I am bummed.
Woohoo!!! Modest Mouse is going to tour the midwest the last two weeks of July!
More details to come . . .

Sunday, May 04, 2003

By the way, I had a group meeting today, and one guy in my group was telling me about this "fantastic cover band" with an "amazing drummer" that was playing on the 400 block of Mifflin yesterday. Yes everyone, it was indeed, Casey's band.
Yes, I agree, it was definitely a lovely party. Yes, a lovely party. Though I got about two hours of sleep due to:
1) Lingering partiers throwing beer bottles
2) The street sweeper machine going up and down the street VERY LOUDLY
3) Our fucking neighbor trying to break the door down

#3 is what pissed me off the most. What a psycho.

Friday, May 02, 2003

Liz, I was just listening to "All My Little Words" by the Magnetic Fields. There is officially one of the best lyrics ever in this song: "you tell me that you're unboyfriendable." What a great word, unboyfriendable.
The Flaming Lips, the Starlight Mints, and Ben Kweller in Chicago Friday, June 6!!! At the YMCA??? Perhaps a weekend to visit Ben!

Thursday, May 01, 2003

Dismemberment Plan tours the midwest!
6/17 Mnpls MN
6/18 Milwaukee
6/19 Chicago
Of course, just in time for my class to start. Milwaukee it is!
