What's wrong with quirky?

Some ornery Atlantic Monthly writer hates on my favorite brand of humor.

I read this piece and thought it was unduly harsh, too. I haven't seen the This American Life TV show, but it seems crazy to me to say that the radio show doesn't have characters who "face real peril, show real anguish, and have genuine epiphanies."

Basically to me it just seems like the author is defining "quirk" awfully broadly -- as anything upper-middle-class white people like, more or less. Not quite good enough.

I've sort of touched on this, but I do think The Atlantic article has a point. I'm actually working on something else to kind of expand on the point since I stumbled back over the subject with my rediscovery of the joys of Radio Lab.
